Cycling and Doping not a good combo!

I feel like the only attention being given to the world of cycling is when an American is winning the Tour de France, or when an American is accused of using drugs to win the Tour de France.

First of all, there are a lot of other cycling events that go on all over the world besides the Tour de France. I've noticed, though, that its the one that is mainly reported on by mainstream news media outlets.

Furthermore, outside the Tour de France, the only other time the cycling world garners any attention is when people are using drugs to improve their performances. Floyd Landis, an American, won last year's Tour, but he had the title stripped from him a month after. Landis was accused to using synthetic testosterone or something like that. Currently he is trying to appeal such the accusation.

In the past few days, reports have come up that Italy's Ivan Basso was approached by the Italian doping agency to test him. Now, he cannot ride for the Discovery Channel Team.

I hate that this is the only news to be found about this incredible sport. I do agree that doping is bad, but negative attention is the only attention this sport seems to get these days. Cycling is an incredible sport with the world's most elite atheletes. Think about it, can you ride your bike for 100+ miles in one sitting, averaging about 35mph? Yeah its pretty difficult.

doping has taken all sports by suprise. jsut legalize it and there wont be any more problems. most people are using these preformance enhancers any way they just pass the drug tests. so like my freind peter tosh said legalize it and dont criticize it

Exactly. Evolution is not getting us better in sports so might as well give it a nudge in the right direction. haha just kidding.

No, but seriously. I agree.

You both sound really uneducated on this topic. Legalize blood doping? Do you guys even know what it is? When you increase you RBC (Red Blood Cell) count by blood doping, you increase the thickness of your blood which increases the chance of blood clots and risk for a heart attack. Initaially you can increase you aerobic capacity by 20%, however overall performance actaully deteriorates because an increase in viscosity (blood thickness) slows blood flow and cardiac output. Also, your VO2 Max and endurance will suffer. Doping is used for high altitudes mainly in endurance competition because there is less oxygen in the air. RBCs carry oxygen to the heart, therefore athletes are artificially increasing areobic capacity. EPO Hormone(also illegal) is actaully becoming more popular to inject because it produces RBCs and you can avoid the blood transfusion. Many Olympic endurance athletes have died over the years. That's why it's illegal. Blood doping isn't about technology anyway, it's biological science.
