Intel's market share rises on AMD's problems

A study by JP Morgan showed that AMD is losing a bit of their market share. Intel picked up a few percentage points off of AMD. This is after several years of AMD gaining on Intel. One explanation is AMD had to dump a lot of chips out of inventory. But AMD lost points in all computer markets from laptops to servers. Also computer sales in general have been slowing down.

Also, I think Intel's Core2Duo really caught AMD off guard. AMD was ahead of Intel for awhile. At one point analysts were saying that Intel was 18 months behind. Intel's new (and incompatible) 64-bit Itanium chips never did take off, but AMD's x86-compatible 64-bit extensions did.
Then it seemed like AMD rested on its laurels a bit, and Intel pulled the Core2Duo design out of its Israeli factory, and it was a big hit. AMD decided to build native quad-core chips with its next generation architecture, and it has just taken a lot longer than they expected. You should see AMDs new chips around the middle of this year.
