Talking about security!!!

MSNBC reported today that a laptop was stolen from a consultant of a pension-benefits consulting firm hired by Nieman Marcus. The laptop contained 160,000 employees personal information. Personal information such as employees’ social security numbers, birthdates, addresses, salaries, employees history, etc. It was taken by a technician hired by the consultant whose computer was stolen from. Nieman Marcus weren’t sure whether the data are encrypted. It is a serious business when company loses employees records. Employees are at the mercy of their employers to protect their most valuable information. Incidents such as this are absolutely unacceptable! Companies should not be carrying around information that has people’s social security without having it encrypted. Extreme measures of protection should be taken into consideration by companies when it comes to the security of personal information.

Yikes! I am sure that Neiman Marcus has the data backed up, but what about all of the personal info about employees? How will they handle such a huge information leak?? Will NM be held responsible?
