Electronic Tax Filing On Record Pace As Deadline Looms

According to the IRS, Americans are filing their taxes at a record pace. Since March 30, 57 million people have filed there taxes online. This is a increase of 5.9 % since last year. The interesting thing is that most of the people that are filing their taxes online are young adults ranging from 18 to 29.

I imagine the younger generation is more used to doing things by computer.
I wish you could file directly on the IRS site. I looked into e-file for the first time this year. You actually are directed to a 3rd party company, where you fill out the forms and file them. The federal filing is free if you make under a certain income and have simple taxes. In California, the state filing is not free.
Don't forget you have until April 17th this year.

Right, you have to go through a 3rd party company like HR Block, etc. As an individual, you cannot directly file from the IRS website.

Why do say April 16th? According to irs.gov:

My IRS tax instructions say I should file by April 16, 2007. Is this correct?
This is not correct. At the time these instructions were approved for printing, IRS believed it was correct. Thus, any IRS form, instruction or publication that currently shows an “April 16, 2007” due date should now be read as “April 17, 2007.”
