CPU
If I were buying a computer or a CPU today, I would definitely get an Intel Core 2 Duo. Here is a good article with benchmarks:

AMD was ahead of Intel for quite a while. The Athlon 64's integrated memory controller and 64-bit extensions were brilliant moves. My last 2 CPU purchases were AMD, but I would definitely buy Intel today.
