Last week in the lecture on Databases Dr. Fang talked about enterprise database management systems and she mentioned that Microsoft’s SQL server was one of the major ones. On February 20, 2007 Microsoft released the SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, which is a free service pack for its popular SQL Server 2005 database application. This service pack essentially tweaks the existing database software to make it compatible Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system and Office 2007 suite. Also included in the update are a number of data compression, manageability and interoperability enhancements. The SQL Server 2005 SP2 can be downloaded from Microsoft's Web site.

Microsoft’s SQL server is a well known enterprise database management system and this new service pack will probably be utilized by many organizations. I think it is very interesting that Microsoft must update the database to be compatible with its new operating system and software. It really shows how databases can be affected by changes in technology and so they need to be made compatible with new technology.
