Open source

From what I have read I haven’t heard very much on the subject of open source programs. This software has a very large benefit over the usual operating systems. By allowing the public to the coding the possibilities for refining the software are endless. Unlike Windows, which limits their code, open source like Linux and Unix allow anyone to view and modify the code.

The advantages are people can rewrite the program to their needs. Another advantage is the cost is much less. There is no company that you have to pay for licenses. And the size of the operating system is smaller. This allows smaller devices to have a full operating system.

The disadvantage is if your company uses the software and improves upon the programming that work can not be copyrighted. This has limited some companies from using it because they don’t want the public knowing all of the source code to their products.

I had planned to talk about open source phenomenon in later discussion sessions. It is kinda similar to the user-generated content idea. It is a very interesting topic.
